The Vancouver International Airport Authority is committed to providing fully accessible facilities to
persons with disabilities or special needs and in 1980 initiated the Airport Barrier Free Program.
The International Terminal was built with this program in mind and has many features for the
disabled. The Domestic Terminal is also slowly being re-fitted, and it will too contain many of
the new Barrier Free enhancement.
Access for People with Disabilities in the International Terminal:
- Visual fire alarms
- Closed captions monitors and entertainment TV's
- TTY (Telecommunication Device for the Deaf) pay telephones are available and TTY general airport information phone service can be reached at 604.207.7070
- Microphone/volume controlled handsets at check-in, service and rental counters
- Visual Paging
- Access to all public areas
- Low resistance doors and handles
- Airline check-in counters with wheelchair clearance and lowered writing shelf
- Dedicated passenger drop-off/loading zone
- Raised baggage carousels for easy luggage pick-up
- Wheelchair accessible washrooms
- Braille lettering in elevators and washrooms
- Tactile hazard warnings
- Talking elevators that announce each floor
Access for People with Disabilities in the Domestic Terminal:
- Pedestrian ramps on Levels 1 and 2
- Hospital sized main elevators
- Parking with accessible metres
- A parking lot shuttle with wheelchair lift
- Accessible taxi service
- Accessible telephones and water fountains
- Unisex accessible washroom facilities
- Emergency call switches and visual fire alarms for unisex washrooms
- Volume control emergency telephones
- Elevators at Gates A5 and Gate C38

Disabled parking is available curbside at all levels of the International Terminal and Domestic
Terminal and in the Parkade.
